Mystery under the hood

Took my car in today for a state inspection. Seemed like a simple task, as the car is fairly new and in good running order. Seems the mystery under the hood of the car thought differently.
Needed an oil change, which is ok as it has been a few thousand miles. However, it needed a new air filter and oil filter to go along with the new oil. Hmmm. Ok, what is, is.
Well guess what, the front brakes need new pads. Hmmmm again, but ok, dont want the brakes to go bad.  Ohhhhhh, guess what, rear breaks need new rotors. Hmmmm, not sure what that is, but sounds important, so ok.
Ohhhh, tires are getting a little old and need to be replaced. Ok, that is enough. PT Barnum said a fool was born every minute and I think my minute is up.
$300 later, I left with my car running smooth and the old tires still on the car. Guess I showed them not to fool with me. I know, I probably just spent $250 I didnt need to spend, but by God, I didnt buy the tires. Man has to have some pride left.

Enigma

So the dictionary say that Enigma is a person or situation that is mysterious or difficult to understand. I define Enigma as "weatherperson".

For three days they told us to prepare for thunderstorms and cold weather. As such, we decided to not go out on the boat.

The day arrives and Ta Da, it is sunny and warm. I check the weatherperson and they say it is thunderstorms and cold.

I go outside and it is warm and sunny. Thus we capture this day on video to prove that Enigma is called Weatherperson.

Heros

Over the years I have had many different heros who ranged from Superman to modern day individuals. Fortunately, my heros have matured along with my development over the years, so I don't go to sleep at night hoping tomorrow I will be able to fly like Superman.

One of my current heros is, strangely enough, my mother-in-law, Olive. This WWII war bride immigrated from England, raised a family, and at the tender age of 85 is now a competitive Ballroom dancer. She competes with the best of the dancers (most about half her age) and wins at the Tango, Cha Cha, Foxtrot, Swing, and many others (including the Quick Step, which is exhausting just to watch).

I really believe we have a place in our life where we reach a fork in the road. One way goes to "Life is hard", the other goes to "Life is fun". We have a choice, no matter what our circumstances, to go down either path.

Olive and I are on the "Life is fun" path. She just dances better on it than I do.

Test Pattern

This will definately show my age, but I remember test patterns on TV.
Not only that, but they were black and white, because we didnt have color in any TV.
You would turn on the TV, sit and watch the test pattern for a while until a show would come on the screen. After a few shows, we would get the national anthem, and then back to the test pattern.

I couldnt get to sleep the other night so I thumbed through the 478 chanels on cable. 200 were languages I didnt understand, 100 were selling things I didn't need, 50 were programs that made no sense, and the rest were so boring I couldn't spend time watching.

There are days I really do miss the test pattern.

Food shopping eductation

Went to the food store the other day, which is always an adventure.
It is like a crash course in life perspective as I learn something new in every isle.
First isle I learned patience as a woman blocked the entire flow of shopping carts while she looked at labels.
Next isle I learned gratitude as I watched a mother wrestle with her tantrum producing child (I was grateful it was her and not me).
Next isle I learned cooperation as I reached a top shelf for someone shorter than I was.
Next isle I learned compassion as I watched a young couple put some things back they couldn't afford.

It was a great learning experience and when I finally checked out, I found that the few things I bought were close to the cost of a college education.
That was the hardest lesson the whole day.

Dancing with the ?

Went to Dunkin Donuts today and the man in front of me was dancing.
Needless to say, that is not normal at DD, but I guess he really liked the music.
I was uncomfortable when he started, thinking that such behavior was inappropriate in a public place.
I pretended to not notice him and instead tried to memorize the different donuts in the rack.
But he was really a good dancer. The longer he danced, the more I enjoyed it.
Finally he spun around, did a quick step, and motioned toward me.
I did a few steps, laughed, and then we high five'd each other.

It is amazing how much fun we can miss by being judgmental.

Bed time hell

Cleaning out some boxes the other day and ran into a book of stories I used to read to my kids.
One was Little Red Riding Hood. Here is a kind loving child who goes to pay a visit to her shut-in grandmother. She arrives to find her grandmother eaten by a wolf who now wants to devour her.

Then there was Hansel and Grettle, two poverty stricken children who are abandoned by their parents in the woods. They are then captured by a ugly old woman who is a cannible and wants to eat them. They outsmart the woman by killing her in a fire where she screams in agony.

What in the world were we thinking as we read these things to children. Wait, maybe that is why I'm a little screwy today. My parents read these to me too.
We are strange people.

DRIVE THRU BREAKDOWN

Most things don't irritate me, but one always seems to get to me quickly;
DRIVE THRU WNDOWS

Always tell myself to stay calm, but when that unintelligible voice mutters what I think is "can I take your order", I start to break down.
I know, no matter what I say, they will not understand, will give me the wrong thing, and provide intstruction in some language that has yet to be translated.

So why do I go to the DRIVE THRU WNDOW? To save time and make my life easier.
I better rethink that one again; can't say it is one of my best thought out decisions.

Thinking Green

Spent the day working on my front lawn.
Raked up all the dead grass, got rid of weeds, fertilized, and a thousand other tasks.
Did all that so I can spend the summer mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, watering twice a day, and other fun things.
This being green thing is a lot of work.

My neighbor cemented in his front lawn a few years ago. He seems to have a lot more spare time than I do now.

Why wasn't I born smart instead of so good looken?

Control the world

I am fascinated by how much anger people use to run their life.

I think we really believe that anger is a way to control things.
Ever watch someone who is really angry, they are way out of control;
So I guess that doesn't work.

Most anger comes from the idea that the world should opperate the way I want it to.
Then again, do I really have the ability to control anything other than myself?
So if I can't run me, how could I ever run the world.

Biggest problem with anger??? To me it's the fact that anger is just one letter short of danger.

Mother Board!!!!

My computer was giving me problems so I took it to the computer doctor.
He turned it on, hit a few keys and then said "Mother Board".

I was somewhat surprised but simply smiled and said nothing.

Then he told me what the Mother Board was and how it worked.
I thought when he said "Mother Board" he was swearing.

There are days when I think a portion of life has left me behind.

WONDERFUL TONIGHT

Erick Clapton wrote a song in which he told his wife she looked "Wonderful Tonight".  I'm reminded that I need to tell my wife that she is wonderful all the time.

It's good to let people you love know they are special. It doesn't take a lot of effort and hey,  what you sow out is what you harvest back.

Always being right

Ever notice that some people spend a lot of time trying to be right.
What they say has to be right
What they do has to be right
How they act has to be right
It is a lot of work

Frankly, I'd rather spend my time trying to be happy instead of being right. Seems like life is easier that way.

Going to hell

I've been told that if I live right then I will go to heaven.
Also told if I live wrong I will go to hell.
The problem is, everybody seems to have a different idea of what liven wrong is.

They tell me not to do evil cause evil is wrong.
Problem again, everybody seems to have a different idea about evil.

Lot of people think America is evil.
Lot of Americans think other people are evil.

I heard that God is love. Think I will just trust in that and let the rest go.
I'm sure somebody will think that thought is wrong too.

An Intimate moment

I stood next to her as the morning sun washed over her beautiful frame.
I placed my hand on her and felt her warmth as well as the softness of her skin.
My excitement grew as I entered her and felt the ecstasy of being with her.
Sitting in the chair, I turned the key and heard the power of her engine.
I so love my boat.

What did you think I was talking about??????!!!!!!!

Classical Music

Went to a concert the other night that was positively overwhelming.
Only three violins and two cello, but what they could produce was beyond description.

I remembered going to many concerts for grade school and junior high in which the very same instruments produced sounds that had no resemblance to what I heard the other night.

Guess in all our lives, we have to go through some of the squeaky, not so harmonious places so we can really enjoy the beauty of life when we find it.

Next time something isn't quite so beautiful, I will try to remember it is teaching me how to appreciate beauty.

Angry Angry Angry

I was angry that it rained today.
Then I thought about how dumb it was to be angry at the rain.

Rain doesn't cause anger cause if it did, then everyone would always be angry when it rained.
From what I could see, most of the people were just going on with their lives and were not being angry about the rain.
So I decided to stop being angry about the rain.

Didn't stop the rain, but it sure made my day better.

Winnie the Pooh

Found an old book I had called Winne the Pooh. I loved reading it to my kids, but I think I really just loved reading it for my own joy.
The story was set up as a picture of life from a cartoon perspective. However, it often depicted reality better than any novel I had read.

One character that I encounter in my daily life is Eeyore, the donkey with a negative attitude. Whatever was going on, Eeyore was able to find something wrong with it, and he always knew it would further ruin his life. To him life was hard, complicated, and destined to not work in his favor.

I find Eeyore in a lot of people. They love to play victim.

It was always easy to laugh at Eeyore's antics. Unfortunately, it is not so easy to be around his human counterparts.

Readers’ hearts will be beating hard as they join in this adventure where people come back from the dead, wear so many facades you’re not quite sure who’s on the good or bad side of the law, while experiencing the growing attraction between the lady ‘cop’ who could be lying through her teeth and the normally bored psychologist who stepped into the adventure of a lifetime.

The author, a practicing psychotherapist, certainly knows how to light a fire at the beginning of a tale and guide the reader through all types of personalities and red herrings that will make them very disappointed when the story has to come to an end.

Quill Says: This is one psychologist who has met his match when it comes to a truly astonishing female!
